The land of Mambakkam

Our fields run on groundwater and the Palar River — rice, cotton, sugarcane, and the rhythms that shape every season.

Rooted in the ground: Mambakkam's farming depends on groundwater and the Palar River, supported by irrigation schemes from the Ranipet Agriculture Department.

Water makes this village

Water is the foundation of everything grown here.

The Palar River

The Palar runs close to Mambakkam — a quiet but steady presence that has shaped the fields and farms here for generations.

Ranipet Agriculture Department

Irrigation schemes and horticulture support from the Department have helped farmers here grow more, and more reliably.

Other livelihoods

Beyond the fields, aquaculture and poultry are taking root — new ways to make a living alongside the traditional crops.

What grows here

Commercial crops and household crops — each season has its own rhythm

Rice (Paddy)

The main crop. When the monsoon comes, the fields flood and the paddy goes in. It sets the rhythm of the year.

Cotton

A commercial crop that connects Mambakkam farmers to the textile economy of northern Tamil Nadu.

Sugarcane

Tall rows of cane mark the edges of many farms. Grown for the nearby mills, it brings in steady income across a long season.

Millets

Hardy and reliable. Millets keep households fed through the drier months when the main crops need more careful watching.

Pulses

Good for the table and good for the soil. Pulses are grown between the main cycles and help keep the land healthy.

Vegetables & Horticulture

Seasonal vegetables grown with support from horticulture schemes — feeding the village and adding to household income.
