Ayyanar Shrine
ஐயனார் கோயில்
The Ayyanar shrine stands as guardian of Mambakkam — a deity venerated across Tamil Nadu's villages as the protector of agricultural land, livestock, and community boundaries. Ayyanar is typically represented on horseback, accompanied by his attendants Karuppar and Veerappan, and placed at the outskirts of the village.
Ayyanar worship is one of the oldest and most widespread forms of village religion in Tamil Nadu. As the guardian of the village boundary, he is worshipped to ward off evil, protect crops, and ensure the safe passage of travellers. The deity is traditionally housed in open-air shrines at the edge of the village, flanked by large clay horse figures — offerings from devotees fulfilled.
